Accepting aid message on main scroll page

Recommended Posts

I thought there was a thread about this but I can't find it.

Please could the accepting/not accepting aid message be on the main scroll page as well as on each egg/hatchie page. So many people don't bother to look, just see a few low-stat growing things and add the scroll to fan sites without checking. This isn't so much about view-bombing as about the well-meaning people who think they are being nice but - aren't....

I am SURE this was discussed before, as I remember people worrying about how to word it - but I'm sure there is a way. I can't see anything wrong with the wording we have now, to be honest, but some people felt it was sort of hostile/unwelcoming...

I think this would be very helpful! I for one, didn't know that such a message even existed until many months after joining DC. The message is a bit small and if I'm not mistaken it's on the view page of an egg and only there. I don't personally have this problem of others aiding me with hatching eggs, but I believe it would benefit many who have suffered from view bombing or simply those who prefer to hatch eggs on their own and would like others to be able to notice their stance on this issue in a very evident manner.

Support, especially as I have the "aid accepted" turned off and I'm still getting people adding my dragons to sites as of late. Hopefully, with a more visible placement, people will be less interested in doing so.

I support this ☺

Sorry for this but how does the accepting/not accepting aid message actually look like and where is it placed for others to see? I don't think I ever saw any of them anywhere ninja.gif

*NVM found them :L ~ really inconvenient placement currently ~

Where exactly would it go? Having a banner at the top of a scroll would be distracting, at least to me, but no one would look at it if it was on the bottom.

I would say at the top, and I don't CARE if it's distracting; it needs to be there ! (From what would it distract you, anyway ? You'd know it was going to be there. OK - maybe just at the top of your scroll as viewed by others ?

You pick up the scroll labeled “flurp” and see small sketches of dragons along with information about them. You see that flurp accepts aid raising their dragons.

You pick up the scroll labeled “flurp” and see small sketches of dragons along with information about them. You note that it is against the site rules to give aid to a user without their permission, and that flurp has not given permission.

Personally I don't even think that the message we have now is informative enough; I'd rather have something for no aid like:

Please do not put flurp's growing things into fan sites.

But at least show the message you get from an egg's page.

Why rather than instead of both? Some people don't have their scrollname on their dragon pages, some people may click on an egg without checking the main page, etc. I think both is the best bet.

Oh yes - VERY good point. I didn't exactly mean instead. Off to edit the first post smile.gif

As long as it is only visible when visitors are viewing the scroll, I am ok with that. I don't need an indication when I am looking at my own scroll. I mention it because I can see my own accepting aid status on my eggs, so it is a concern that it would affect my view of the scroll.

I still think there needs to be an indication of how to change it though, given that "not accepting aid" is the default and many don't know they can change it.

I would assume you view your scroll from your /dragons page rather than the general /user/ page. Since the /dragons page doesn't include any of the "you pick up a scroll named [...]", I don't see why it would include any of the accepting aid info. Whereas there isn't a different page/url for dragons. ^^

I know, but I worry that there is always a chance that it would be included even on that page.

It would be nice though if the system could be changed to not show it on your own eggs, regardless of what happens to this suggestion.

If it had to be that way though - wouldn't that at least be better than visitors not seeing it unless they look at an egg ? But I agree - it should ideally only show when others look.

I feel like most people don't bother reading that "you pick up the scroll" bit. I don't.

Maybe bold it or put it on a second line or something. If it's just a continuation of the flavor text, a lot of people will likely overlook it unless they're looking for it specifically.

Fair enough - a second line in bold would be nice smile.gif I just thought people MINDED that ! I just want it up there in lights really laugh.gif

Support 100%

I haven't lost many eggs/hatchlings to viewbombing, but I've had way too many wind up sick and need to be fogged for ages. I use ONE fansite and ONE site only, so I know exactly where my eggs are and don't have to remember which site I posted them on. Using just one site helps me with my timing and I usually know exactly when to check on them.

So yes, I would like to have the 'not accepting aid' message on my scroll page. I don't personally care if it's just on the view page for others or on my scroll page too. And I would like it to be NOTICEABLE, so that there is no ambiguity about the fact that I do NOT need help growing my eggs/hatchlings.

I support this. I already have this in some fashion, with a frozen hatchling that I keep at the top of my scroll named "My dragons need no help growing". But I would suggest having the message be optional, with the default being off. Reason explained below.

The problem is, there's only two messages with the default being "no help". So I suspect too many people who are prone to giving help to random scrolls assume that the people with the default message just didn't notice the option to enable aid and assume that they really do want it. It's not even that they don't see the "no help" message, but they ignore it because it's the default. So this would be the most helpful if the message isn't added to the scroll by default, but has to be enabled. It would be a way of adding a little emphasis to the "no help" message, because if you have to enable it nobody can dismiss it as being "the default thing".

(But if you think adding a third option to the current set is a solution, it has its own troubles. If you have three levels of the current method: a "please help", a "against site rules to add without permission", and a "do NOT help", the default level would be ignored even harder. It would be seen as the level that only people who haven't figured out that you can change it would have, and so get a reaction of "oh, it's a newbie, let me help them" rather than the actual "don't help this person" it's supposed to be)

Total support! I'd *love* *anything* that makes the message clearer (different wording) and more noticeable.

I also support this and a more visible space for a "No help please!" if others see my scroll would be awesome.

Oh, and the wording should not only mention fan sites because what about a person who adds your eggs to a social network site, or a forum with hight traffic or whereever else to get views... dry.gif

If you're referring back to me, I didn't mean three options; I meant I'd like a more SPECIFIC message to say don't help, amd spelling out how not to help.

AGES ago, someone said they didn't know what "accepting aid" and the other message even meant - she asked "how do you help someone ?"

I agree there needs to be some sort of way to make who is and is not accepting help a bit more noticeable. I for example am not able to check on my dragons throughout most of the day so they could die while I am completely unaware that they are getting too many views, or at the very least get sick and have to get fogged.

I didn't really direct it at anyone. I just was stating my opinion that the new positioning of the message should be optional, and why. (because if it's default people will still make the same assumptions that they make with the current system, that the people with the default message just didn't know enough to switch over to aid. It will only mean something if people have to choose to put it there.)

Even so, my OP suggested 3 options, so that was a good call, and I thank you. :xd.png:

I thought most cases where people add eggs to other fansites was more of a malicious thing not them trying to be helpful.

If it was a malicious thing...I don't think it would matter whether or not you're accepting aid is visible or not.

Indeed. But there are actually people who think they are helping, too.

I actually think it should go a step further...if you click not to accept aid from others, somehow it shouldn't allow for eggs to be added anywhere unless it's you doing it...just because it states not to on your page, doesn't mean it won't happen-on purpose-to kill eggs- or someone thinking they are helpful....not sure how that would work, as I know nothing about coding...In all my years on this game, I have never seen this be such a issue.
