http://greg-kennedy.com/dragcave
(or alternately: http://eggdropsoup.co.cc)
A quick programming experiment leads to creation of a new automated DC Fansite. (Credits to Brightflashes for the idea!)

Site Features:
-Automated site, no registration required
-Inbred Check feature for a code
-Inbred Check to see if potential offspring of any number of codes will produce an inbred egg
-Scroll Statistics
-Very simple site design

How to Add a Scroll:
Type your scroll name in the box, hit the button, and all your eggs and hatchlings get automatically added to the list. They stay in the box for 3.5 days* and then disappear. Iframe reloads every minute serving up fresh soup so leave the page running in the background. Meanwhile, a cleaning script will remove your dead eggs or hatchlings within an hour.
*Because of this, if adding to the site, make sure to add your scroll every 3 days to prevent it from being deleted by the automated script.

How to check for Inbreeding:
Follow the link on the main site to the Tools Section.
- To check inbreeding for one egg/hatchling/dragon, add the code to the first box and click the button.
- To check to see if a Couple on your scroll (who have lineage) will produce an inbred egg, add each Adult code in the box, separated by a comma (e.g. "code1, code2").
- Lineage projects needing more than 1 generation future planning can enter any number of codes in the box, and all codes will be compared for duplicate lineage
- By default, inbred checking stops after 12 generations. Tick the "Extended Check" box to enable the script to check farther - but note that allowing additional generations can be very slow!

Scroll Statistics:
Follow the link on the main site to the Tools Section.
- Enter your scroll name in the Statistics section (directly below the Inbreed Validate tool) and hit "Check Me!"
- Marvel in amazement at the numbers.
- Get a dynamic scroll stats banner for your signature!
CODE
[img]http://greg-kennedy.com/dragcave/sig/<scroll name>.png[/img]

- Get a dynamic scroll stats icon for your forum avatar!
CODE
[img]http://greg-kennedy.com/dragcave/avatar/<scroll name>.png[/img]

Buttons for your signature:
All banners and buttons now have their own separate page: http://greg-kennedy.com/dragcave/banners.html

Upcoming Features:
-TJ and I are working to use the API for this site. Once the API is available there will be the following functions:
- ER Hatchlings and Eggs will appear in the first line of code in the 50 eggs/hatchlings box so that priority clicking is made possible.
- More tools that are a work in progress

Will the frozen hatchlings go away any time soon? And also when submitting is there a way to prevent frozens from showing up?

Besides that, pretty cool simple straight-forward site.

Frozen hatchlings should disappear in 3.5 days, but I've now fixed the bug that was adding them in the first place, so they won't come back.

Dead hatchlings and eggs keep showing up until either
a) the default scroll view goes back to showing "Dead Hatchling" and "Dead Egg" instead of calling them all the same thing, or
b) someone gives me access to the Secret Protected API Page.

More feedback please.

To get access to the API you should ask TJ, PM him or email him.
I know he doesn't like screen scraping, it puts a lot more strain on the site then the API does.

Will do.

I have added a "remove scroll" button to take all the dragons last associated with your scroll out of the rotation. (If you put yourself on the list before I added this feature, you'll need to Add it once more first and then you can Remove yourself afterwards).

Nice, I just added my scroll.

The site layout is a bit messy, I think it could be prettier, too.

Since I'm a sucker for minimalism, I think it's awesome.

The only improvement I could think of is to show a few more eggs/hatchies - say 50 per site load. That's few enough to keep it light, but would increase the number of views given because most people don't actually stay on beyond a few refreshes. Another important consideration is - how do you weed out adults? Right now the box says you've got 750 critters - judging by the random pick that gets loaded maybe 15-20% of them are adults or dead eggs/hatchies, that's too much I think.

Thanks. I aim for simplicity on this page. I'll probably go ahead and crank it up to 50 dragons per minute just for fun.

There was a bug where re-adding scrolls would not remove previous entries that had since grown up - this has been fixed. I'm also working on a way to weed out dead eggs and hatchlings, frozens and adults - right now that's totally manual (but I now have a dedicated cleaner at least...), but eventually it should become an automated process.

Thanks to all for the feedback and for trying the site.

I like this idea, too. Except I'm concerned about those who want to click having enough time to click all of them that show up within the allotted time as well as those who have slower computers. Perhaps a good compromise is to bump it up to 40 eggs per reload and change the reload time to 1.5 seconds?

Added myself as well (as experiment and due to this damn thing called curiousity wink.gif ).

For so far I have only 1 remark: Dead eggs. Might be an idea to add a feature or something that makes it so that dead eggs don't show (dead eggs don't need clicks / views wink.gif ).
Edit goes here: Adults showing. Don't require views either ^^

That's the only thing I found so far, if I find more I will post them up ^^.

For the rest: Looks nice, working under the motto KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) which I very much like.

Nice work!

Greets:
D_G

Edit no2: Might be usefull to have a viewcounter which shows how amny people are watching / running it.

- Now that you're using a cleaning of some sort, it looks a lot better - much less adults or dead eggs/tombstones show up. I can manually refresh 15-20 times before I even see one (if any).

- Is there going to be any more content added to it? Such as a counter of how many people are viewing the page or anything like that?

- Clean and Simple look seems messy to some because it's not "organized" with some sort of color-specific template, logo, and sidebars as well as links to outside or whatever. Do you plan to add anything different to it, or are you going to keep it clean and simple? - suggestion: for me, I like the clean and simple, so that's why I'm asking. It's so much more appealing than sites that have a bunch of distractions all around. It's a site that serves its purpose and that's all and it's nice.

- How fast is it growing? Are you able to measure how many more people are adding their scrolls every day and if so, is it continuing to grow, staying at about the same number of scrolls, or falling? (The reason I ask is that it's a great site and I'd be willing to promote it in my lj and to my dc friends and all, but I want to know how popular it is and what your projection for how popular it is is going to be before I recommend).

Thanks! Again, I love your site. : D

Maybe, if it's small and fits the aesthetic of the site. Any major information (detailed statistics, etc) will probably go to separate pages from a small link on the main site. A hitcounter or Users Online might be nice.

I may try to break things up a bit by putting it all on a table or adding some whitespace, but I don't expect to add anything significant (user controls, images, etc). I'm also considering an "enhanced" version which simply litters the page with randomized animated .gifs and a background MIDI.

A day or so ago it hit nearly 1,000 items on the site, but now it seems pretty settled around 750-800. I haven't been tracking how many scrolls are listed... but I can now!

Looks fairly simple to use. Whoa, I like how it automatically adds everything on your scroll. o-o
xd.png cute thread name though.

Did an experiment and posted my scroll. One hatchling I didn't post anywhere else and everything else I posted as usual. through your site alone, my hatchling grew up. Now to repeat the experiment with a fresh egg! I'll let you know what happens!

ALso, when I go to add my scroll, I refresh mannually about 10 times before leaving. If I have more time, I click all the eggs/hatchies in the box first.

Excellent site! It's now bookmarked and something that I'll use and tell my friends about for sure.

Thanks to all who have tried the site so far. We passed a new milestone today with over 1000 items in the queue at once:
1024 ingredients from 202 chefs

Please continue to evaluate the site, and if you like it enough, share it with your friends too. More users = more views = more usefulness for all.
