How do you hold your pencil?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious! Do you hold it how they taught in school? I hold mine in a funky sort of grip that used to get substitute teachers mad at me: see?

Whenever I'm writing or drawing, I usually get funny looks from the people near me.

I hold mine the ideal way. It gives greater precision in my art.

Oh, I see how it would help. I might have to start trying it. Holding my pencil the way I do really only helps with drawing figure studies and other loose stuff. Hmmm...

I think I hold a pencil the same way you do, but I hold the pencil between the middle and index finger, with the thumb used for support unsure.gif Now that I think about it, that's how I earned a new friend during elementary school, they saw me holding the pencil incorrectly and well...a friendship kind of bloomed out of it xd.png

Aww yeah. I'm not alone in the universe. I would high five you through the screen if I could. Making friends in weird ways is the best way to make them too.

I wonder who first decided what was the "correct" way to hold the pencil? I am pretty sure that the standard way is probably the most precise, but where did it all begin?

I just hold mine like this. Except further in on the tip :3 When I was younger, I used to hold it like that except in between my middle and ring fingers.

It's the most intuitive way to hold a pencil, so I guess it just came to be :3

I kind of hold it the way shown in VeeVeeLa's picture, but I hold it more towards my palm.

I was taught to write by someone who is left-handed; maybe that warped my grip, being a natural righty and all. OwO

I hold my pencil with all five fingers, with the pinky resting close to the tip. I've never met anyone who holds their pencil similar to me, and I'll take a picture eventually...

Both of my parents are left handed, so I taught myself how to hold a pencil. My grandmother tried to teach me to hold it the ideal way, but I just don't do it that way XD I CAN write the ideal way, it just feels alien to me.

I hold my pencil with 4 fingers. My thumb and middle finger pinch the pencil near the bottom, my pointer finger rests kinda curled around higher up the pencil, my ring finger has the brownish part resting on it (well, half of the brownish part and half of the not-brownish part), and my pinky doesn't do anything.

I'd take a picture if I could. I don't know how other people hold it, but my teachers used to say it was wrong?

I have a friend who holds it that way. I thought it was pretty cool and tried writing like that and my words turned out all slanted and funny tongue.gif I hold it similar to VeeVeeLa.

I was never taught the "proper" way to hold a pencil. I didn't know there was an ideal way to hold one till I was seven or so, when a teacher asked me about my penmanship. I still get comments from teachers and friends who say I write funny, but they also say I've got some of the best handwriting they've seen. I don't really think it matters how you hold your pencil, it's what you write with it that counts =)

I saw your grip and I started cracking up xd.png

Hey, whatever works for you biggrin.gif

I hold my pencil weird too.. I rest my pencil on my ring finger instead of my middle. It helps me make my writing darker.. I write really dark xd.png

Now you've met one. I've always held my pencil that way. It feels weird for me to hold it the "right" way, though that's probably due to my stubbornness and my refusal to learn that way when I was really little. Don't know where I picked it up, though, because my parents are right-handed and so am I.

I can't describe it but my sister says it's very ugly and she doesn't know how I can write holding a pen the way I do. dry.gif

Yours is funny! Whatever works for you is fine, I guess. No one never taught me the "right way".

I hold my pencil the 'proper' way. Boring, I know. I just kinda did it that way and liked it. But I can pretty much write holding the pencil any way. I sometimes switch it so the pencil rests on my ring finger as opposed to my middle because I have nasty callouses on my middle fingers because I write a lot. My fingers are pretty oddly shaped because I used to write darkly. Needless to say, I write tons lighter now to preserve my fingers. xd.png

I hold it like most people, but I think I hold my pencil too tight because I have a big callus on my middle finger. >_<"

I tend to twist my pencil around in circles any time I lift it from the paper to write. Like, while I'm writing. Anybody else do that?

I hold it like I was taught to hold it otherwise. =p Guuvi's pic, I guess.
