Voluntary name wiping

Recommended Posts

So!

There's been a lot of suggestions on various renames, name-editing and so on. Most of them talk about renaming a single dragon, be they in BSA or actual site functionality form.

What I've been discussing today is an option that's not meant to serve that purpose, but a slightly different one (even though it may be used for it in lack of other options) - a voluntary full-out name wipe for every dragon on the scroll, as if the scroll owner had been AFK for those fateful 2 months. Just, you know, without having to actually be AFK.

Far as I understand, as the function to free up all names of a user's scroll is already in the system, it should be easy enough to adapt to a voluntary-use option. It should obviously have a very, very long cooldown (at least 2 months, if not longer) to prevent constant name-wiping and server stress due to it.

What's it for? Well, some of us, I am sure, would simply like to start over far as naming is concerned - such as to add a surname, maybe. The task of naming may not seem daunting to a new user, but one quickly begins to run out of ideas when using a naming pattern without a unique surname or prefix and the dragons start piling up in the hundreds.

Obviously, if single-dragon non-BSA (or BSA without a cooldown) renaming is implemented, this option would be completely unnecessary, but I figured I'd put it out there until a verdict is reached for the single-target rename.

Whatcha think?

While I know this would be a feature that a lot of users may not use, I am suggesting it for people who either want to start anew, or just simply have lost interest in naming and would like all the other dragons to conform to their new style of playing (me!).

A safeguard to not accidentally deleting all your names, I would suggest a pop up box or two asking if you'd REALLY want to do this and that it will remove ALL names of your dragons...just so curious people don't make a very drastic mistake. 'Cause I can't imagine the horror of someone losing all their names on accident...especially with a large scroll.

Also, none of the deleted names can be recovered automatically. No 'oopsie' button for those who did not read the warning signs. If you want a name back that was mass deleted, you have to go and try naming a dragon and hope that it's still available.

Another issue I see being brought up, just like mass-release, is how easy it would be for someone to destroy another persons scroll if it was hacked into and all their names were deleted. I don't really have a great argument to defend my suggestion against a situation like this except to say that account security should be #1 to a player and that if your account was compromised, then that is your own fault really...but unlike mass-release, you would still have all your dragons, they would just lose their names. So it's not too bad?

Finally, yes I honestly could just not log into my account for whatever amount of time, but I want to continue playing dragoncave AND start my new style of playing. I hope this is not a lot to ask for.

I wouldn't mind seeing this. There are some dragons of mine that have cool codes, and now I kind of regret naming over them. A renaming feature wouldn't help in that case since I would just have to choose a new name.

I'd like this. I've been wishing I could have a surname for my dragons, but starting it now would just seem odd, and I can't stand to be away from DC for more than three days, let alone two months. I could see this having even a one year cooldown, because really, why do you need to rename every dragon you own every two or three months?

Although this still wouldn't fix the issue with tons of broken links when a named dragon gets it's name wiped.

I don't really know if losing a dragon name would result in many broken links. After all, dragons already do lose their names after 2 months of inactivity, so it can't be that bad a problem. The name link could always just redirect to the code link so there wouldn't be a problem.

Except if the name was later taken by a different dragon it would mess that up.

What about when someone else takes that name, though?

Lol.

I don't get the 'broken links' problem...the same way that the code link is replaced with the name one when a dragon is named, it would change to the new name when it was renamed. If someone tried going to the original name link, they'd get a "you can't find the dragon you're looking for", as it happens when a dragon loses it's name in some other way. If someone else took that first name, then the link would direct you to that dragon. I don't see what the problem is...but I may be missing something important as I'm quite sleepy at the moment. x_x

Easy: it would just work however it already works now. I don't think I've ever heard of someone complaining about a broken link related to a dragon losing its name due to inactivity. Even if that name is then taken by someone else, there still doesn't seem to be any problems associated with it. Not that I've seen anyway.

I record all the decendants of my dragons in my "lair" on another forum, and because I use BBC codes to get the pretty pictures, I occasionaly end up with broken links.

The owner of one of my Dorkies babies went inactive, and it also messed up a description of the mother. She had a description that stated that the favored her eldest daughter, Sabrina, more that any other blah blah blah, and then her daughter lost her name.

I might use this, but I'd prefer to be able to rename just a few of them, so I'd have to record names, wipe then rename the ones I want to have the same name, THEN have the fun of giving new names to the few I dont like the names of.

I much prefer an action for a single dragon to have its name wiped than the whole scroll. Right now there are only about two or three I would like renamed. I have well over 500 dragons. With this option it would mean I would have to rename all 500+ just so I could fix my two or three dragons who were misnamed. What I would like is to have the scroll wipe option IN ADDITION to an individual wipe, for those who do want a mass-renaming.

I did mention it's not meant as replacement to a single-target rename. That would just be silly for those who collected a lot of dragons.

However, keep in mind a single-target rename may not end up adequate replacement for this, either - certain implementations simply wouldn't mirror the functionality (Example: if the single-target rename had a cooldown of any kind, and you wanted to rename 200 dragons... let's just say you'd be there for a looooooong time).

This seems to be the most logical choice. Perhaps under the BSA page there could be a spot where there are both choices, each with a different cool-down. For example, if you are only changing one name, you have to wait five days. But if you choose the full scroll rename, there would be a cool-down of six months. If you have two of these dragons, you can do a full rename with one, then fix some of the naming accidents with the other one.

Personally, I would love a full scroll rename. My name pattern is to use Bionicle names, but I've run out since someone else also uses them (which I don't mind, they're pretty sweet names). But if I had used a surname from the beginning, then I wouldn't have run out. Plus, I want my frozen hatchlings to have a different name pattern and I have a Dorkface that I forgot to add the surname to.

i would really like a scroll wide wipe names option. when i started i used a pattern, then some random manes, then i used a prefix for a while, etc... i would really love to start anew with all the naming.

Sounds like a plan. biggrin.gif Especially for people who realize only belatedly that using affixes or surnames is a good idea. (People like me, that is.)

I wouldn't use it, but I see a few here who would. (I'd prefer single name, if anything.) Definitely a long cool down, though.

yes, this would have to have a long cooldown, or/and maybe a limit number of times you can do this, too, like two times.

you do this twice, with say 6 moths in between, and you just lose the option then.

I would like this As it stands now the only way to wipe out the names is not to log in for a few months. I cant stay away from my scroll or the cave for that long

I'd love to see this implemented. I have a lot of dragons I'd like to rename. Some I accidentally gave names that don't go with their gender. Some names I misspelled. Some I gave names I don't like, and some I gave naming systems I don't like. I haven't had much luck with names so far... dry.gif And I just can't stay logged off for two months.

I'd like that, too. I changed my naming system because it became to bothersome to find names. It seemd other people had a similar system so many names were already taken. And I too have misnamed males as females and did a typing mistake.

Wow, I was just thinking about this the other day. I'd like to have the option to be able to clear the names on my scroll and start over, really. So hard to find available names anymore. sad.gif

When we first got the Release option for adults, I released roughly 1/4th of my entire scroll for this very reason. I had stupid/unoriginal/annoying names and I didn't want those dragon-names on my scroll anymore. If I had been able to completely start over with names it would've been much easier.

So I definitely support this.

i support this too :3

there're some dragons i'd like to rename, and i would mind renaming all of them to achieve it xd.png

and, with a task as big as that, no matter how long the cooldown, i wouldn't do it more than once xd.png

Is it possible to have a way to unname every dragon at once? I don't know what others would think do this idea- it doesn't have much to do with the game, more of personal presence on how you want your scroll to look. It really annoys me that I have too many dragons to unname all of them, since doing so would take far too long, and waste time I could be using to so other things. But I don't like the way it is, since I have a bunch of named ones as well. It's about fifty-fifty, and it's a waste of time to name all or unname all. A way to get rid of everything at once would be really useful.
