Merch interest does have a factor in how Drag Cave is accepted to a level, the more interesting the items, the more the people will remember and later check out the site.

Digressing however, my main point of that little paragraph is that not every artist is going to like having the dragon sprites they spent time on free being used for profit, so not all the dragons will be 'available' for say if we wanted to start a collectors series as a gambit to draw people in - they wouldn't be able to get all the 'cards or figurines'. I'm just looking at it from an observer's standpoint and experience as an artist in the past observing how other artists react to their ideas being used such.

I'm not interested in the idea at all, but I do find it strange that people are mentioning the inability for many users to attend conventions because of location. I mean, is there even a way to get around that? Save for hosting it on the Moon, where everyone has to travel the same distance and no one is at an advantage.

Just seems like a weird thing to bring up, since no matter where on earth the location is there will be people unable to attend. Not so much of a problem as it is a fact, lol.

Edit: And seeing how difficult it is for users to even get permission to do fan art of some DC species, I can't imagine much diversity in DC merchandise outside of the store.

Honestly, I don't care either way since I probably wouldn't go anyway (no $$). Just confused that anyone would think that the current merch wouldn't be acceptable for a con. The artists already gave their okay for these items to be sold to support the site.
As to collectible figurines or such, at first I thought 'Hey, neat idea!' Then I realized: oh, wait - that's why I love DC in the first place - collecting pixels takes up WAY less space! xd.png

I WOULD LOVE TO GO!!
(sorry for the caps there. just expressing my love and want to go.)
I might be able to go, but it depends on if my father/mother are willing to take me there and let me stay with a bunch of random people I've more than likely never met before (but hey, how different can it be from a camp that any kid goes to when they're 7 and in girl scouts? Lots of random people. I kinda miss those days...) I am more than happy to make art of any kind, especially sketches and collages, though! And even if my parents would take me and let me stay, it'd also depend on when (weekend/spring break-ish/summer vacation-ish/etc.)

ShaladorsLady, I agree with you there on the 'pixels take less space', but what about those that don't have internet/computers? They could play with their little figurines in their free time. smile.gif (And speaking of figurines, because I have too much spare clay, I could try to make some. They'll be so awesome!)

I think the biggest issue is "where can it be located to get the most number of users to be able to attend?"

Because if it was hosted somewhere where, like, only 10 people could attend... Each of those 10 people would either have to fork over an obscene amount of money to get in, or the con would have sucked up a huge amount of money for a terrible turnout that wasn't worth the sheer cost it would have taken.

So, anything like an actual con would require a decent number of attendees--at least enough to allow for breaking even with the costs and all.

Well, that makes a bit more sense. Though I wouldn't bet on such a DC gathering being a monetary success, it does make one wonder exactly how popular DragCave is. It's always pointed out that the forums are such a tiny portion of the user base-- I'm curious how large its dedicated fanbase truly is.

It might perhaps be more feasible to arrange a dragoncave meetup as an unofficial gathering during other, more established conventions. Of course, everyone would be attending their local convention, and not one big one, but it would at least allow dragcave users to meet each other. I'm not sure of dragoncave's financial situation, so I don't know how it would work to have dragoncave rent out a hall and set up everything. Besides, what events would there be other than selling merchandise that is available online? If the goal is to meet other users, then piggybacking on existing conventions might be the way to go.

I'd love to see it realized, but realistically, it is highly unlikely that this would happen.

Most people here are students, or people who don't have the means to fork out enough money out of their savings to go for such things. People who are working will also have to take time off to go somewhere where they won't be earning money for the future, but spending it.
This is an international game. I'm from Singapore, and just an air ticket to New Zealand (nearest Westerner country) would already cost at least a thousand, and that's just a one-way ticket. I don't see my parents willing to fork out such a large sum to send me to wherever the convention might take place, they're making me pay my own way for my 5-day holiday to Melbourne, Australia. I had to earn my own money. Going into the US is something I drool about, and probably never realize my dream in 10 years' time, when I get a car, and worry about saving enough money for a house.
Even if it's financially possible, you're going to a place where practically almost everyone is a stranger. I can already see parents going into overprotective mode at all the possibilities this might go wrong.
And then when it's being held, what about the others who are unable to make it? Especially if this is a one-time thing? This is one thing I think a game should stay a game.
I read about the local conventions, and I don't think that would be in my country o_o I haven't even met another person who is from Singapore (actually, I saw one, but I think he's inactive already).
How is Skype or video conversations different from the IRC, other than verbalising the conversation and/or showing your face? Even if it's done, I don't think the server is able to hold hundreds of people talking at one go; it'd crash.

Just my two cents wink.gif

This. I just don't see this happening for these reasons. I love living in the U.S, but despise any method of traveling, even if it's an hour car ride to the nearest city. >->;. I just hate being away from home for more than a half-hour, so this gets a giant no from me. ._.
