Fanfiction

Noticed there wasn't a general fanfiction thread :3

Opinions? Recs? Favorite pairings, scenarios, elements? What fandoms do you read in and what sites do you use? Do you write?

Self: Actively reading Inception, White Collar, Vorkosigan Saga, Sherlock (BBC) and Dollhouse fic, plus a few small book fandoms and the occasional fic in another half-dozen large fandoms. When I was younger, I thought fanfiction was 99%+ crap, but started reading again last year and realized I was just looking in the wrong places n__n

Oooh, I like fanfiction smile.gif

I've gotten tired of sifting through all the crap out there though, so I mostly just get some recommendations from TVTropes and then work on from there tongue.gif

I hate AU fics on principal, unless they take place in the same universe but with a small twist somewhere in the timeline or plot, or highschool fics if they're really - and I mean really - well done.

I mainly read Resident Evil-fanfics, but occasionally some other fics when I get bored. xd.png

And I also write my own crazy little stories; for example, a Resident Evil - Pokémon-crossover. Yeah.

Eh, mine are kind of a mixed variety. /shot

Sometimes I write fanfiction, but it isn't that great.

I wrote Pokemon, Doctor Who and BBC Sherlock. Wrote once for the Matrix and The Fire Series by Chris D'lacey. I must say that I am most comfortable with Pokemon.. tongue.gif

Favourite pairings (Sherlock): Sherlock/John and Moriarty/Molly

Pokemon: none

Doctor Who: 10/Rose or a Doctor/Master adventure (no slash/romance)

I completely recommend practically every fanfic written by Mira Jade in the Sherlock/DW fandom: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/654479/Mira_Jade

I am thinking of writing for Inception, Cobb/Mal relationship :3 :3

I often read MLP: FiM fanfic, Mass Effect, and the occasional Portal fic. I also have a single Doctor Who fic saved, that's... ... it's a little disturbing, honestly xd.png I mostly read from wherever, Fanfic.net and Deviant Art are the major ones.

Not big on pairings in anything... except Mass Effect. I'm a sucker for well done Shepard/Thane fics xd.png (And Kolyat/Oriana...) Otherwise, I just want a story. Pairings do not matter, or manage to bug me. ... mostly in Portal, though dry.gif

I've got several recommendations for Portal and ME fic. I also write some. ... I have a Portal fic up here on DC, actually.

I don't read fanfics any more. Got tired of going through the c.... to find something nice. Points of No Return (HP) was a nice fic with a rather well managed OC, however that was 10 years ago and that's the memory I keep, so it might not be that good.

Summertimes Blues was also a nice fic I read several times. But then again, it might not be that good.

Anyways, I've read LOTR, HP, Pokemon and Digimon (when I was younger), FFX and sometimes something here and there, like Early Edition fics, Dark Elf fics, Kingdom Hearts, or whatever.

As for writing, I've done my things here and there, but mostly HP. THe world is so vast it has so much unexploited potential.

I don't write any more, I stick to writing my own stuff, and it consumes me way too much time to bother about fanfiction.

I normally look for a story. I love werewolves and shapeshifters, so I mainly stick to seeking this out, but I've read some really nice time travel ones.

I like seeing a bit of romance here and there, as long as it's not the main focus of the aventure. Unfortunately, non custom pairings, or possible pairins (for example a Harry/Hermione would not be custom, but possible), unless they are done very, very well, it just ruins the story. I once tried reading a Draco/Hermione fic, and it reached such points of ridicule that it was unbearable. The fic was mainly; we're so cute, we find each other so hot, we fight, we love, we fight again, we love...... for like 20 chapters... O_O

I've read some George/Hermione, Hermione/Sirius/Lupin/James, and some can be rather interesting. But Draco/Hermione is something that just does not work, or I haven't found anyone that can make it work in a realistic way.

I'm also not fond of AU. Crossovers (really, guys, HP and LOTR just does not work), etc. Funny thing is I'm guilty of doing those myself xd.png, and no wonder they're my worst stories.

Self Insert OC are just... WOW!

And Truth or Dare fics.... meh! I have playe ToD, and find it the most boring game ever, so that must be why I don't like them.

Now I've tried to read a few Harry Potter fics but those have all been Harry/Draco. Most of them I've quit by the third chapter but others I can't even get through the first. No more Harry Potter Fanfics for me.

Now, what got me into my current genre, the one I mostly read and only write, were Yu Yu Hakusho fanfics. HeieXKurama, KuramaXYusuke, HieiXKuramaXYusuke (or any mix of that). I flat out refused (past tense since I don't read them anymore) to read anything yaoi with Kuwabara in it. *shudders in horror*

The only fanfiction I still read regularly (I've long since gone into original fiction) is Fake Fanficton by Kracken. Now that is good fanfiction.

For those of you who don't know and are asking "What do you mean, fake fanfiction? As opposed to true fanfiction?" Fake is a 7 book yaoi manga by Sanami Matoh.

EDIT: Kad, you said you had been looking in the wrong places, where are you looking now?

I like reading fanfiction. Mostly Resident Evil or Harry Potter for me, although I have

been known to read some other stuff on occasion. All the stuff I write is Resident Evil

though. Nothing else yet. xd.png

@ Annatjie - I've started on TV Tropes rec pages too with new fandoms ^__^ Usually I look up things I might be watching/reading on TV Tropes to begin with, to decide if I might like them, so the fanfic rec page is just a click away.

@ DarkEternity - if you ever end up writing the Cobb/Mal fic please let me know <3

@ Dr. Paine - "a little disturbing" as a description is almost a rec for me, if the style is readable. Link?

And agreed on the pairings; I've never categorized fic by pairing and will usually read anything with the slightest hint of canon subtext (or even just no strong negative text).

@ DragonNightHowler - by custom, I think you mean "canon", or pairings that exist in the original work smile.gif

I love crossovers, but I understand that some are inherently less likely to turn out well than others. The ones written mostly so character A from fandom X and character B from fandom Y can have hot sex are generally not good, but other scenarios can create gorgeous fic. Have you not read any good crossovers/AUs, or just think the majority is bad?

@ Kanaye -

As a kid I'd go on fanfiction.net, which was where the 99% crap came from.

Nowadays: for new fandoms, I'll start on fanfiction rec pages on TV Tropes and google "<name of fandom> fic rec list" which usually comes up with decent material. Once I've found a few pieces I like, I can then look for their authors' rec lists, and from there it explodes :3

Fandom matters a lot.. Harry Potter would be difficult because of the size and demographics of that fandom. It was where I started too- I remember it being so hard to find anything worth reading. The main reason Inception is my current addiction is the incredible quality of the fandom's general output. I can open the Inception kink meme (obligatory warning for explicit stories) and click on any prompt I find intriguing. 99% is readable with few mechanics errors, the majority is great, and I keep having my favorites list overwritten with new fic.

I love fanfiction.

I usually read it for anime/mangas, books or movies, and they're based on fanpairings, never the stuff like alternate, fanmade storylines or whatever. ...They're usually yaoi/slash - very rarely het. /inner fangirl?

I've never written fanfiction, and I don't think I ever will - once I've tried, but failed rather miserably...

hmm, well, I still read a lot on fanfiction.net ... and While I agree that many of the stories told are lacking in many ways I still enjoy the site quite a bit.

Fanfiction is really something of a passion of mine I guess. I write a bit, mostly HP but have one very interesting idea of FinalFantasy X, X-2 that I'm working on. I can only hope I'll be able to publish it one day...

The reason I still enjoy the site is that I enjoy reviewing fics that catches my attention, it is always nice to get the author to know what you think about their story and writing ability.

As for what I read, it varies greatly.

I mostly enjoy HP - because there is so many stories to find compared to the other genres. And I'll admit that I'm a bit of a slash addict, oh well.

Time travel, alternative universe, special powers - but absolutely not invincible!, these are some of the themes I like.

And Crossovers! That must be the best concept ever, heh. Or not, it's not easy to find a well written crossover... but when you do... ah, you are just happy to be alive and able to read English. biggrin.gif

Which is another fact of interest... My native language is Swedish, and when it comes to fanfiction I just can't stand it. It's the same for most dubbed cartoons/animes... My poor country simply doesn't have that many good voice actors.

Either way, have a day! / Jesagon

I used to read fanfiction all the time. Now I never look at it. Most of the stories just seem so poorly written... and I guess not watching things that would have a fanfic in my language might contribute to it. =V

After awhile I guess I just figured "eh, if I like it, I'll do it myself"

Because I'm arrogant.

I mostly read in the ToS2 fandom nowadays, and I'm really partial to Richter/Emil or Richter/Aster stuff, but I love Ratatosk/Emil, too. And Richter/Aster/Emil is my OT3, but there's only one fanfic for it besides the one I'm co-writing with somebody. xd.png

I write some, too, mostly because I got fed up with there not being enough that interests me. Lack of content relevant to my interests drove me to create it. xd.png

I prefer yaoi pairings, but don't mind het or yuri if they work. Or if they're crack and appeal to me. xd.png

I have have two fanfiction.net accounts I post to, one for stuff that's more on the "likely to disturb/disgust" side and one that's for more "normal" stuff. xd.png I've also posted some stuff to AdultFanFiction and my LiveJournal, but only the stuff that's too mature for FFN. I'll post the stuff on two of my DA accounts, too.

As far as recs go, I cannot resist a chance to plug Dimensional Rift by Hikaru Irving. It's a ToS2 fanfic, and the pairing is Richter/Aster/Emil. xd.png My favorite fanfic of all time! It's a WIP, and updated irregularly, but I love it. I'll have to get back to you on other ones I like, though. I've got a few TWEWY ones that I really like, and sadly there are more that I like but I can't suggest them because they've hit deadfic status, I fear... *sigh*

The best ones always hit deadfic status. D:

I admit that I'm partial to hurt/comfort stories myself, and angst is fun. xd.png But humor/parody can be great, too!

Sometimes I'll intentionally read horrible fanfiction because I have some kind of masochistic fascination with it. xd.png I think my newer work is pretty good, though my older work is horrible.

Yet people still seem to really like my old work, even though it sucks horribly. D:

Well, I'm actually writing a fic right now, just kinda taking a short break while I figure out the best way to magically fix everything. |D

Oh, thanks for the recommendation, maybe I'll get a better fandom fix this summer then. 8D /severely dissappointed by the fanfiction.net's amount of total OOC crap

I usually read it at fanfiction.net, but I have to be super specific in what I search for otherwise some real rubbish comes up. I'm pretty flexible on the genre, its usually whatever i've been watching or reading at the time. I really love Firefly ones though, maybe because the actual series got cut off so abruptly.

I gave up on FF.net entirely for that reason. <3

also

and google "<name of fandom> fic rec list" which usually comes up with decent material. Once I've found a few pieces I like, I can then look for their authors' rec lists, and from there it explodes :3
or "<common pairing within fandom> fanfiction recs" too.

I don't mind OOC fics, as long as they're well-written. I just classify them as mild crack, personally. And I think it can be fun to read the odd OOC fic--provided, like I said, it's well-written by somebody who understands what spelling, punctuation, and grammar are as well as how to use them. And writing the odd OOC fic can be therapeutic. :3 Personally, I make it my personal mission to provide fics for a very specific set of interests, be they OOC or not, that are of decent-quality writing, because I know how frustrating it can be to just be in the odd mood where you crave something OOC for some reason but all you can find is trash. My friend is obsessed with fanfics. I am serious. especially SHINee ones and ones for other Korean Bands.

I, on the other hand, find them quite annoying. (Because of ^her) xd.png

I write fanfiction sometimes.

For some reason, I don't get much satisfaction out of reading a piece after I've finished it. Maybe because I already have while I work?

I used to write quite a bit of fanfiction - wrote mostly Teenage Mutant ninja turtle stories as I was a big fan/follower of the cartoons/comics/movies. But my writing of TMNT stories has been in a slump lately and my muses are leading elsewhere to more original characters.

Most of my stories can still be found on FF. net. Like a lot of others I found many stories on FF.net that I read now are so much crap with too many Mary Sue/Gary Stu characters, and the like and it is very difficult to find the true gems among the garbage.

I'm enjoying writing and working on other stuff and might eventually take down my unfinished stories if I can't get back to them.

I am in love with fanfiction. OOC can get annoying, but as long as it doesnt stray too far i am usually good. it is actually really interesting to see what people can come up with.

I write them too. I am working on an after war fic for the IC; and planning one for Harry Potter (FF set up, right there). I usually read and post on FF.net, but i am also on Shur'tugal.com. if anyone wants somegood FF to read, i can point you in the right direction for IC, Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl, and quite a few others. Cant promise that they are done, though.

I write a lot of fanfiction (if anyone is curious, my Fanfiction.net handle is the same as the one I use here). Right now I'm mostly into Yu-Gi-Oh! in its various flavors, but I used to do a lot with Digimon and Power Rangers, and I had some Pokemon stuff that people seem to like. My big project right now is a huuuuge rewrite of the first season of Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds.
