Freedom Hills: A Mustang RP

It was the middle of the night. Rain slapped the ground and thunder shook the sky. This was a typical storm for this region, but it would not only be the storm harassing the herd tonight. Four horses and two foals strained against the rain desperately trying to get back to the safety of their cave. Among the herd was the lead stallion, a grey Paso Fino, two Quarter Horses, a Hanoverian and the two Paint Horse foals, Canyon and Paisley. When they had almost reached the hills where their cave was hidden a sudden light flashed in the sky. Then another one; it kept repeating. Soon a green monster emerged from the clouds, and it was coming straight for the herd. The herd panicked and fled in the other direction. They could hear a faint crunching sound behind them and they could still see the monster overhead. The crunching grew louder and another object was right behind the horses. It also had four legs and was carrying something with two legs. (The horses did not know it was a truck and the green monster is really a helicopter.) The herd ran faster and the foals struggled to keep up. Suddenly they hit a fence. They turned around to find a different way to go, but they soon realized the fencing was all around them. The lead stallion started striking his feet against the fence but nothing happened. After all the horses started trying a small hole was made, big enough only for the foals. “Go!” the lead stallion yelled at them over the sound of the wind and rain. “Go and don’t come back!” The foals scrambled out of the hole and ran back toward their home.

Seven Years Later:

It has been five years since that night. Canyon and Paisley got separated as they were running but both of them have found a herd to join. Now, they have foals of their own, Tonto and Willow. Neither knows the other exists, so they each started their own herds.

Plot:

You are a horse. You can be part of Willow’s, Tonto’s herd, or Sage's herd, a lone wild horse without a herd, or a horse at the human’s ranch. Wild horses try not to be captured during round-ups but most horses typically are. If you have been captured by humans escape is not impossible but unlikely.

Username: Shiny Hazard Sign

Name: Polaris

Age: Five years

Gender: Female

Personality: Though quiet and reserved, Polaris is not shy. Her silence takes on an air of aloof indifference, choosing to not participate with the others or take part in conversations. She says what she must, and does what she feels is needed, and then moves on. She does not regret or hesitate easily, for she takes how ever long is needed to figure out a solution to the problem at hand before acting. Polaris has a very cool, even disposition, if not seemingly a bit cold.

Because she doesn't talk much towards others, many take it to mean she doesn't like company. Polaris is actually more neutral about the idea; she doesn't like or dislike other horses, but tolerates company and solitude at an even rate. This causes her to appear quite mysterious and different, as it doesn't seem she quite fits in anywhere. And, unlike most wild horses, she does not fear humans and their bizarre contraptions. She takes her time to study them when she can, and will find ways to escape should she potentially come across a dangerous situation. Polaris never seems to lose her cool or become visibly disturbed, but acts more like a ghost that wanders in and out of existence.

Appearance: Polaris The bit of Arabian blood that she possesses makes her to be a bit on the shorter side; she stands just over fourteen hands tall, and her build is lean and more petite than the average wild horse.

History: Polaris's mother, Sonna, was one of the first horses to join into Willow's herd. At that time, she had already had a colt that was only a few weeks old. When he was about six months of age, he wandered from the herd to find a creek to drink from. Unfortunately, he happened to stumble across a group of humans out on a hunt, and was roped in for capture. A few years later, Sonna gave birth to Polaris and the two stayed close together, though this was more out of Sonna's fear of losing another child than it was Polaris's instinct to remain near her mother. In fact, as a foal, Polaris's quiet personality emerged early on. She didn't play often with others her age and didn't talk much to the adults. She often was caught gazing into the distance, lost in thought, or standing off to the side of the herd as she grazed by herself. When Sonna grew ill and eventually passed away, it came as no surprise to the others when Polaris up and left the next morning.

She wandered somewhat aimlessly through the wilderness, avoiding Willow's herd and sometimes the other herds that she happened to scent on the wind. However, at one point during a rainstorm, a horse from Tonto's herd found her sleeping under a wilting and battered tree and brought her to the rest of the group. She remained with them for a while, though like before she didn't fit in very much and was prone to trouble if she traveled too far for the lead stallion's liking. She had a strange attraction to the human's place and would often look towards their encampment far beyond the forests; when she was little, Sonna had told her of a brother that lived among the humans, and had ever since been drawn to the idea that she had family somewhere in the midst of man. Of course, under Tonto's supervision, Polaris could never be gone long enough to actually come across the humans themselves. Thus her stay in that herd only lasted a few months before she disappeared into the night and didn't return.

Since then, Polaris lived between the herds. She avoided the group of horses in the plateau, as she wasn't interested in being forced to remain with others again. Occasionally she found herself on the edge of the forest that separated the wild from the human reserve, and would gaze out from the shadows looking for her long lost brother. Some times she feels she catches glimpses of him; a tall, dark figure locked inside a wooden box as the humans mill about in their strange multi-colored pelts.

Status: Wild

Herd: Loner~

Other:Password Approved. And, if Polaris could sing (which is highly unlikely...),

this is similar to what it sounds like. Her voice has that same deep, feminine richness to it.

His last memories of her are his mother screaming at him to run and find a herd to stay with until he grew up and could protect himself. He never knew his dad, he abandoned the two at Winter's birth. Winter, as his name suggests, was born on the winter solstice in a raging blizzard.

Status: Wild

Herd: Tonto

Username: Shiny Hazard Sign

Name: Sundancer

Age: Eight Years

Gender: Stallion

Personality: Through all of his life experiences, Sundancer has learned much about the world and the creatures in it. Because of this, he is very wise and mature, often caught deep in thought over philosophical curiosities or of life itself. He seems to have little fear of anything, including humans or natural predators. His demeanor is typically kind and gentle, almost fatherly towards the younger few, and even warm towards horses he meets for the first time. Of course, if strangers are rude and unwelcoming, Sundancer is quite capable of standing his own and will become less kind towards those he feels are not deserving of it. Like most stallions, Sundancer protects the herd and puts himself in danger should anyone fall under threat.

For the most part, he is a bit more on the quiet side. He enjoys company and talking towards others, but finds equal pleasure in studying the world by himself.

Appearance: Sun-dance-er. He stands just under seventeen hands.

History: Sundancer was born in the human's barn, to a palomino mother and a blood father. The humans determined a future of show jumping for him and began conditioning him to train at an early age. He enjoyed the company of humans, as his were generally kind and patient. Sometimes one of the stablehands would be rude, but Sundancer took joy out of playing jokes on those few in return. The human children, especially, enjoyed climbing all over him, and he let them. There was one human he really adored; a young girl about eight years old, who came up to his stall every morning to braid his mane and tail. She was very sweet and snuck treats into his food bucket and groomed him for hours. When he had become a yearling, she would sneak out during the night and take him to the corral, where she would sit on his back and he would proudly trot around in circles for her enjoyment.

She pampered him for another year, and during that time his owners began train him for show. Other people began to ride him and put all sorts of bizarre things on his back and in his mouth. It was all worth it to him, however, when his little girl would come out and spoil him with love. When it came time for his first show, she was there cheering him on. Although he didn't win that time, he strove to do his best in the other shows and trials he had to compete in.

When Sundancer was three years old, tragedy struck the humans. His little girl stopped coming to see him, and he would pace anxiously in his stall. He refused to be ridden by the other jockeys. He whinnied every night, wishing his little girl would come back to play with him. Then, one day, she did. But he didn't recognize her. An older human was pushing her along in some strange object that she sat in, with wheels that allowed her to move around. Her head sagged a little and she barely had a mane anymore, just wisps of blonde that Sundancer used to know. Her eyes were dark and sunken, and she was skinny and pale. At first, he didn't know what it was that had come up to his stall. It smelled sickly and frail, and it scared him a little. But when she opened her mouth, said his name, and reached out to stroke his muzzle in the same way she had always done, he realized his little girl must have fallen terribly, terribly ill. The sadness struck him like a lightning bolt. When the adult human wheeled her away finally, Sundancer went and curled up at the back of his stall, face buried in the hay so he wouldn't see the sunshine when it eventually poured through the door again.

The next day, when he finally got to his feet and peered over his stall door, he saw a long procession of humans in dark colors leading from the main house down the road. He saw many flowers, and odd sounds were coming from the group of humans that he normally would hear from the tiny children that fell and scuffed their knees. Though he didn't quite understand the meaning of it, he came to know that he wasn't going to be seeing his little girl anymore.

After that, Sundancer seemed to lose his energy. He obeyed the stallhands and the groomers without protest, but more often than not he had to be encouraged to go any faster than a walk. His owners finally gave up trying to enter him in shows, since he refused to jump and would trip over his own hooves. They started to leave him in his stall longer and longer, until his only time outside would be the hour-long moment of the day when they let him loose in the corral.

One night, when a new stable hand was trying to latch his stall door and carry a large pile of brushes at the same time, the lock broke. In his hurry, the boy jammed a piece of wood into the lock to prevent the door from swinging open. Sundancer noticed this immediately. Once the rest of the humans had left and the barn was quiet, he reached over the door and grasped the wood piece in his teeth and pulled it out. He stole away into the night and escaped into the wilderness.

He wandered for another year after that, learning the ways of the wild on his own. When he was six years old he came across Willow's herd and began to live with them.

Hi! I'm soupnazi and I'll be critiquing your roleplay today.

Among the herd is the lead stallion, a grey Paso Fino, two Quarter Horses, a Hanoverian and the two Paint Horse foals, Canyon and Paisley.

"was", not "is" to keep with past tense.

Then another one, it kept repeating itself.

The comma should be a semicolon, and since the flash isn't a being "itself" should be deleted.

(The horses did not know it was a truck and the green monster is really a helicopter).

The period should be inside the parenthesis.

Maps! A good map is always nice. While it's in no way necessary, I recommend making a map of the setting if you can--maps are very helpful. Again, though, it's not necessary; I'm just suggesting it.

Ok... Made those edits. I was going to make a map, but I don't know how to put it in the post since I have it saved as a word file.

Hmm... How did you create the map? Was it actually in Word, or was it somewhere else? If it was in Word, I don't know if you can properly export it, but you can hit printscreen on your keyboard (it might take a bit of looking to find it--and the word screen may be abbreviated) and open up an image editing program, hit CTRL + V, and then crop the image you get to just have the map. Save that and upload it, and you're good.

Yes, I did make it on Word. I can't seem to get it to work... I could fix my paragraph to make it more detailed though if that helps.

If you feel comfortable with it, you could email me the document and I can probably get it--I'll PM you my email address now.

((Willow))

It was morning and the sun had just risen. The wind rustled through the grass as Willow and her herd migrated toward the spring. When they arrived, Willow bent her head down and took a drink. Soon the others in the herd followed. After they finished Willow walked to the front of her herd. "So", she asked. "What do you want to do next?"

((Tonto))

Tonto stretched and yawned trying to wake himself up. It is already morning, the night went by too fast. He thought to himself. He looked around at his herd who were also beginning to rise. Tonto began to walk through the horses saying "Good Morning" to each of the horses who were awake.

((And thus the RP is started!))

Sunfire heard the stall doors opening, he rose his head up to see his "owner". His owner was a guy around 20 years old. He bought Sunfire when he was just a foal, after a round up. Sunfire was separated from his mother and father. Such a sad day. His owner put his halter on and he took the lounge line out.

Sunfire was walked to the round pin and was forced to go around in circles. His owner was very high strung and did not take no for an answer. If he caught Sunfire off guard he would smack him in the butt with a crop. Sunfire was cantering around in the arena, he slowed a little to catch his breath. Though his owner had no part in that, he walked over to poor Sunfire and smacked him on the butt making Sun go.

Angel lay immobilized on the ground. Her head rested on the roots of a tall tree as she called out for any kind of help. She had been attacked by wolves and her injuries were deep. Angel attempted to bring herself to her feet but struggle with the task. She knew that being a horse, it would be dangerous for her to be lying down for a long period of time.

Willow:

In the middle of Willow's speech she heard something or someone crying out for help. "Um.." she said tapping her hooves against the rock in front of her. "I will be right back. Bandit and Sunny", she addressed two mares in her herd. "You two come with me." With that she took off running with he greatest speed toward the source of the noise. Soon Willow and her companions arrived at a tree where a horse was lying injured on the grass beneath a tree. Instinctively she knew some type of wolf or mountain lion had attacked her. Willow knelt down next to the horse. "Can you walk? If so, we can escort you back to my herd." Bandit and Sunny knelt down next to Willow and began pestering the horse with all sorts of questions."What type of animal attacked you? How long have you been lying here?" "Enough!" Willow interrupted. "This horse might not want to talk." then in a lower voice Willow said, "What is your name?"

Sycamore was a proud horse, with velvet-soft fur and an odd coloration for a purebred Gypsy Vanner. But there he was, calm and loyal, as he stared with dark auburn eyes from his corral. A toss of his head and he trotted around, his darj tail a flag waving in the air. The stripe of white between his eyes faced a certain direction as his ears flicked forward when sounds were heard of pounding hooves and the occasional smack of a crop.

The stallion paused his trotting and leaned over his fence into the ring beside it, snorting. Stupid human, didn't understand he'd work that poor horse to it's death if he kept up like that. His eyes continued to follow the horse as he trotted again, and leaped 'round his ring. And then the owner did something unbearable. While the grey horse slowed slightly he smacked him again, forcing him back into his previous pace. That wasn't right. Thinking quickly, he reached over the man's shoulder and grabbed his crop, prancing away with it before letting it drop. He then turned to the grey horse.

"Who're you? Doesn't look like your master likes you too much. I suppose I'm fortunate in those regards."

Sunfire saw a dapple dun Gypsy Vanner. "Thank you for doing that, he was getting out of control with that crop. My name is Sunfire, I used to be wild before a round up. That person is trying to break me, he is going to have a hard time with that. I am going to try to escape this place and return home to my herd. Sunfire said.

Casi looked back at her mother's small herd in the distance. She wanted to explore, not graze, didn't they understand? She sighed deeply and snorted at herself, puffing her chest out like a proud lion and wandering off forward, expecting to hear the click, clack of her small, black hooves, but the grass didn't let the sound come out.

"I bet there is better grass by the lake" Murmured the foal, staring off at the lake 50 meters away. She knew predators hunted and drank there, but they'd never kill her? Right? They'd never done it before, she was standing there! Eh. What matters. She kicked her front left leg at the ground and suddenly cantered forward, afraid she'd fall. She only learnt how to canter about a week ago. She felt herself tripping, but her balance got back to her hooves.

"I'm here!" Casi cheered, trotting up to the lake. She beant down, her ears turning in all directions. The cool water made her mouth beg for more, it was quite a hot day, also windy; blowing hot winds at the animals that lived her. Suddenly she felt a fly on her rump and flicked her tail in disgust, not feeling it anymore. Stupid flies! Especially on hot days. Her ears picked up light pads of paws and she turned to see a small fox coming her way, belly flat on the ground.

Casi backed off, her ears layn on the back of her head, teeth showing in a snort. The fox kept coming; Uh oh! She whinied and cantered the opposite direction, the next second she was flat on her face, a rock halfly out of the ground behind her. She managed to get up and wince at her pain-filled leg, she 'hopped' or staggered to the herd's direction, whining for help as she felt the fox drawing it.

((Right. Technically I suppose he's blue, as grey are usually white or a duller grey, but he's not sky blue or anything. xd.png

@Dragongirl, foxes wouldn't go after a foal. They're cowardly little beasts, and usually only go after something like a chicken or something very small, like a lamb at the most, though that's a stretch for them.))

Sycamore nodded to the horse before him, his ears forward and obviously interested now. The other horse was a wild one? He had heard tales of such, but he had heard they were brutal, savage creatures who were only out to hurt the domestic ones. If this was a wild horse, perhaps escaping would be nice. He didn't really like being penned up, nor did he like going to shows...

"Say, you're a wild one? Impressive. I can help you... for a price. Take me with you. I probably know this place better and my strong legs can probably kick a fence down faster than yours can. I want to know what it's like being free, and if I don't like it, then I'll just go back. Not a problem."

Sequoia tossed her head and turned her ears forward as she thought she heard a cry. It was faint, not very loud, but she heard in nonetheless. Looking around, she decided to go herself. It would be adventure, and maybe she'd be seen as a hero when she got back, bringing an injured horse leaning on her... Oh, the glory...

So she spurred herself into a gallop and ran towards the faint whinnies, and managed to see a dot in the distance that looked as if it were a foal. Her neck elongated and her ears flattened as she pushed herself farther and faster. She had to make it in time. She had to.

And suddenly she saw a foal, and with surprise, a fox. It was probably rabid if it were chasing the poor thing. And with horror Sequoia saw it was none other than Casi, her leader's foal.

She nodded to her and galloped straight for the fox, planning on trampling it if it didn't move. And move it did, tail between it's legs as it high-tailed it away.

"You weren't supposed to be here, were you? No, there's no one around here, so that means you were a bad girl and snuck out. Come on then, let's get you back to camp. Don't want anymore foxes 'round."

Sunfire nodded to the horse, and his tail was swishing back and forth incessantly. "Ok! At night when the humans turn us out we can escape. Yes! I can finally return home to my herd! "You will love it being wild! No halters, no bridles, no nothing! And especially no shows at all! Though humans come in and try to round us up and that is how I got here..." I hope those fences are wooden or that horse will have a very hard time breaking it.

(( Was gonna say it in this post >.<, that the fox had rabies. *cough* ))

"I didn't sneak out! I-I was thirsty! Plus, there is better grass here!" Casi protested, getting up onto her feet, sore hoof in the air. She stomped on the grass with another hoof and it bounced a little, but still retook it's shape. "Told you!" She snorted loudly, trying to hide to embaressment inside her.

"Sequioa, how do animals get rabies in the first place? I swear that fox had rabies" Casi murmured getting her mind off the subject, walking with the older horse.

(( Blah. ))

((Oops. Sorry! DDD:))

The paint mare brushed off the comment about the grass being better and sighed. Of course the grass was better here, but where the grass was better there was almost indefinitely more predators.

"Well, my grand-mare used to tell me a story. It was supposedly old, but it explained why we got it.

"Once, a long time ago, there was a foolish horse. No predator could best her, and she galloped freely and with strength, making fun of the petty animals. Her herd was the greatest of them all, and she boasted this with glee, for no one could deny it, for none could challenge her.

The other animals were angry. They came together and decided something had to be done. They didn't like her disrespect, but none of them could outwit or outfight her. So they went to the cunning snake, who was sitting in the sun. The horses gave him no trouble, and so he slept peacefully and without worry.

'Snake! Snake! We need something from you!' they called, afraid the horse might hear.

'What is it, mammalian creatures?' he responded, looking at them from black jewel eyes.

'The mare! She has run us down, put us to shame, bragged, defeated and wrangled the mos fearsome of predators! We need your help!'

'I see. I will grant you with a weapon that will strike fear into her heart, as well as strike your own,' the snake replied. And the magic was so. Promptly all the animals by him raged and frothed at the mouth, looking for something to bite. Every creature they bit became rabid, but they died soon after. One tried to bit snake, but his magic only affected the mammals. And so even the mare learned of Rabies and was afraid," Sequoia responded, but stopped and looked at the foal.

"Anyway, the story's not true. Rabies is spread from mammal to mammal by mouth when they bite you. It's impossible to cure. Did it bite you?" she suddenly asked with urgency, looking over the foal. What would they do if she was?

Sycamore nodded. He would help, because it did sound nice to him. And if human round him up, then it wouldn't be so bad, it'd just be life back to normal. Nodding, he agreed.

"I can do it. Down in my pasture the fences are wooden and I can kick 'em down. What about you? Either way, I'll figure out how to get you out of there, don't worry.

The wild sounds nice... Why doesn't every horse escape, I wonder? How long have you been here, by the way? Not very long, I'd surmise considering you didn't know what the fences were made of... Perhaps you've just never payed attention. So what do we do once we're out? Do you know a place to go? Do we go to the woods or the hills or what? I want to know if you have a game plan, if you're serious about this. Because if you aren't I could get in some serious trouble."

"Ummm" Casi wondered with a small frown, what would Willow do if she was bitten? She'd probably murder her before she could bite. She traced back. The pain in her leg was because of the fall, when she tripped over her hooves. Her eyes closed, eyelash over eyelash. She could feel the breath of the fox on her legs still, but it was her fear of the pain. "I don't think so" She breathed, squaring her shoulders. She caught up and said "Wouldn't Snake's venom be rabies? It has no cure and if you are bitten by an animal that hasn't died yet that has been bitten you get venom inside yourself? Huh? Snake was very cruel and mean to those animals... hmm" She frowned.

"My grand-horse told me a story about how the first horses were created." Casi asked, thinking the story over.

"When the animals discovered Cheetah, he kept showing off his hunting skills and fighting skills, all the animals thought he musn't be fast because he had all these other skills. Once he asked the animals for a race, just to show off. He said that he'd give all the predators all his meat and the plant-eaters his territory to eat. He said if he won he got the lion's territory. They all agreed.

He said he wasn't a fast runner, so once the race started he pretened to be lagging behind. Half way, he bolted and raced past. The cheetah won and got the lion's territory for his keeping.

Eagle- thinking she was faster- challenged him to a race as she couldn't be in the last race. He accepted and bet her easily, taking the meat she had collected.

The animals went to the wise old man who lived in the clouds and asked:

"Wise old man, would you make an animal who was faster than Cheetah, or could at least be the fastest plant-eater?" He nodded and granted their wish, but the animal would be a surprise and slightly slower than the Cheetah, but could win with some strategies. The animals went off and the next day they found a strange animal grazing on grass. Cheetah was the first to race over and challenge it, so she accepted.

The race started and Cheetah went slow, while the horse did the same. Bolt! The cheetah raced. He tried to gain up on the animal as he ducked everywhere, then suddenly, bang! He was face first into a tree. The animal was sneaky, tricky, and fast! He won the race and he asked for everything back to the proper owner, so the animals took them back from Cheetah. When they asked it's name it said "Horse" and they knew it was a kind animal" Casi smiled brightly.

"The reason why horses don't escape, is that they don't know where to go. I used to belong to Tonto's herd, and from here it is about a 3 to 4 hour walk, though only about 1 to 2 hours galloping.

"I have been here exactly one year to answer your question." The worst year of my life.. WE go to the plaques to Tonto's herd. He should remember me. Trust me you won't get in trouble, I know the route from here."

Willow:

Willow stared down at Angel, trying to come up with a solution. "Well.." she began, "I have to move my herd down this way, so," Now she turned toward Bandit and Sunny, "You two, stay with Angel. Make sure you aren't attacked again. I am going to move the herd down this way. They should still be at the spring." She began to gallop away when she thought of something else and she turned back to the threesome. "I was supposed to banish that traitor Sage while we were at the spring, then I left to come here. I will have to banish her when I arrive at the spring. This may take longer than I expected, sorry guys." With that she cantered back toward the spring. When Willow arrived she went up to the same rock and banged her feet against it to gain everyone's attention. Soon the horses were focusing on her. "Okay! I have some important things to talk to you about, but I don't think they should be heard by the traitor among us." The horses agreed by nodding their heads and glancing in the direction of Sage, who was standing in the back of the herd. "Sage, please come up here." Before Sage had even made it up to the rock, Willow began her speech. "The horse standing beside me has committed horrible crimes. Because of this I banish her to- " Willow paused trying to think of something. "Somewhere away from us!" She waited until Sage was out of earshot, a small speck on the horizon, before she continued. "Now, I found a horse who was attacked by a wolf. She is sitting under a tree with Bandit and Sunny right now. We will be moving that way because she can't move to us. Lets go!" She stepped down off of the rock and began to take role of all the horses. "Wait! Where is Casi and Sequoia?"
