Digimon Rewrite

Recommended Posts

Hello there, potential readers!

This is the official Digimon Rewrite discussion thread! What is 'Digimon Rewrite', I hear you ask? It is a deconstructional Digimon story, comparable in tone to Attack on Titan, or Puella Magi Madoka Magica of recent anime history, and also with Serial Experiments Lain and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Basically a Digimon story similar to Digimon Tamers, but taken a different (and, ultimately, darker/even more adult) way.

A brief history of the project:

Digimon Rewrite is a story that was first conceived in summer 2011, briefly going through life as an RP in the freeform board, before eventually becoming a story on fanfiction.net. However, eventually, the nature of the plot demanded that text written in DigiCode, the hieroglyphic alphabet of the Digital World. So, a site just for 'Rewrite' was created, which allowed such text to be produced. The story kept up a fairly regular schedule of one episode a week up until it reached Episode 20, when during production of Episode 21, real life started encroaching in, and caused a stall of the project. Things were then silent for close to a year, when a project to rewrite all of the existing episodes was launched, but only got as far as Episode 04, before things fell apart once more.

...

Sorry if that was a bit of a ramble ^^""

Anyway, 'Digimon Rewrite' is now back in heavy production, but with a few key changes.

Updates will be sporadic, so I can't give a definitive schedule, but (hopefully) every month will have a new episode somewhere.

Returning readers will notice major changes in the layout of the story itself, which is due to cutting out unnessecary filler, resulting in a planned episode count of 64, versus the original 108.

The story itself is split into five 'books' each containing thirteen episodes.

Well, enough about the technical stuff, I think it's time to talk about the plot a bit.

The setting of Digimon Rewrite is of contemporary earth (specifically, 2011, as that is when the story was first written), nothing is really all that different from real life. Except where computers are concerned. For unknown reasons, data on the Internet has begun to gain sentience, quietly amassing power under the radar. Once it reaches critical mass, it takes over any and all digital apparatus within it's surrounding area, and generate a Digital Field.

Digital Fields in Rewrite, are vastly different than they are in Digimon Tamers. They resemble a warped versions of what they once were, themed around whatever habitat that Digimon would inhabit in the Digital World. For instance, if a Drimogemon were to generate a Digital Field inside of a library, it would make the library look like it was underground, whereas if it was Meramon, it would be inside a volcano, instead. Note that the Digital World is completely nonexistent in the world of Digimon Rewrite, Digimon are intelligent data that has amassed enough normal data to cross over, through unknown means. This makes all Digimon technically the same species, their form is a variable determined by what types of data they absorb.

Once they have created their Digital Field, it completely galvanises whatever the location was before. As such, Digital Fields only occur within buildings. Once you cross the threshold of said building, you enter the Digital Field, and there are no cosmetic warning signs. Once you are inside, The Digimon feeds on the electrical impulses in your brain, killing you in the process. Your body is then broken down into more data by the Digital Field, further strengthening the Digimon. Your body then changes in appearance to match the decor of the field. In the gloomy field of a Bakemon, you may become a gravestone, for instance.

If the Digimon that crosses over is a Champion, it can expend some of the data it has amassed to create what is known as a 'Slave-Drive Digimon' - a seperate Rookie Digimon in the form of whatever that Champion's Rookie would have been. At this point, the original

Digimon becomes known as a 'Master-Drive Digimon' and it can have hundreds of Slave-Drives tied to it.

As they gather data, these wild Digimon may Digivolve to the next level as per normal, though only Rookie and Champion may directly cross over and generate a Digital Field. And as a rule, Digimon only care about acquiring more data.

Once a Digital Field is closed, it takes any bodies away with it, leaving any casualties missing persons in the eyes if the law, forever.

To fight against this threat, a mysterious human-looking entity known only as The Contractor appears to certain humans who enter Digital Fields, seemingly at random, and gives then thre options: die within the Digital Field, leave the field unscathed one time only, or form a Paradigm Contract with him, and become a Penultima-Kilo.

Those who become Penultima-Kilo are assigned a colour and equipped with a weapon known as a D-Arms, both of their own choosing. They are also given a power, again of their own choosing, but one that only works within the confines of a Digital Field. Their phones are converted into a Digivice-like device known as a D-Spacer, which retains it's appearance in the real world, but shifts to it's true form when in a Digital Field. Finally, they are offered a wish, that The Contractor will grant, something he says he does in 'compensation and condolence'. The wish offers a power of it's own, dependant on the wish.

Becoming a Penultima-Kilo binds you to the Digimon whose field you entered. It also changes adds a layer of code into your language, allowing all Penultima-Kilo to understand one another, and allowing them to read normal DigiCode. Penultima-Kilo may keep in touch and socialise with one another using the D-Network function of the D-Spacer, which can be accessed via a Spitit Adapter, a USB-like device usually worn around the neck, and received upon contracting.

Other functions of the D-Spacer include all those of the best modern phones of today, along with the ability to track Digital Fields, and other Penultima-Kilo, and to communicate with your Digimon partner.

Digimon partners remain in a low-data version of their Digital Field, as they do not have physical bodies. As such, they are invisible and intangible to those around them, and can only contact humans by emailing, or phoning them.

By hunting Digimon, Penultima-Kilo acquire SD memory cards known as DigiMemories. DigiMemories are what keep Penultima Kilo alive. The D-Spacer has, instead of a battery gague, something called a 'Bandwidth Meter'. It is unknown exactly what the Bandwidth Meter measures exactly, but as it gets closer to 100%, the Penultima-Kilo's mental health is detrimentally affected. DigiMemories are used to take the strain off of the Meter temporarily, lowering it until it begins to climb once more. It climbs higher the more emotional stress you are under.

DigiMemories are also used to purchase upgrades from The Contractor, such as further powers (up to two more), better equipment, such as the D-Skimmer, which allows for more data collection, and the D-Emulator, which heightens the damage delivered, and halves the damage taken, at the cost of doubling the strain on the Bandwidth Meter, or even the D-Transer, which no one has acquired before. He also offers Digivolution programs in exchange for DigiMemories, such as the protocols nessecary for the D-Spacer to allow Battle Digivolution (to Champion), and Empathy Digivolution (to Ultimate). He also offers D-Proxies, devices which allow for permanent out-of-battle Digivolution, at a small permanent strain to the Bandwidth Meter.

Finally, there exists another type of Digital Field, about which, little is known.

Abstract Digital Fields, are Digital Fields that do not bare any resemblance to the building they are contained in, and are also much larger on the inside than on the outside. More powerful Slave-Drives, known as 'Proxy Digimon' exist here, and are a lot more diverse in species and level, and also more independent. Encrypted DigiCode, unreadable to Penultima-Kilo, litters the field as well. At the centre of the field is an extremely powerful Digimon known as a 'Server Digimon', that is always an Ultimate or Mega. They reside in something known as the 'Server Nest', with a 'Control Spire' somewhere within the room.

Phew. That's it for the plot.

Watch for updates on the characters, and an imminent release date for Episode 01!

Yeah, the delay is Sissy's final exams right now.

And the site, of course ;D

Still need that DigiCode after all.

Episode 01, 'Event Horizon', is almost completed, and should be up during the week sometime, hopefully.

Also watch the site for updates reflecting the relaunch soon~

Feel free to ask any questions while we wait, it'll keep the thread alive, and I'll be happy to answer ^^

How are (did?) all of the exams go? I just have a quick question about the length of the episodes. Are they going to have more content than they did last time due to the cutting of some of the other episodes? Just wondeirng if there were some things in the cut episodes that would still need to be added somewhere.

Sissy's?

Still on-going, this is her final year of school, so she'll have exams for some time yet.

As for length... Roughly the same, I think. I mean, not much content was 'cut' per se... More it was merged together, or moved around. If it helps...

Episode 01 is roughly the same

Episode 02 is a combination of the original episodes 02 and 08

Episode 03 is a combination of the original episodes 03, 04, and 11

Episodes 04 and 05 are the original

06 and 07

Episode 06 is the original episode 10, with a bit of 13

Episode 07 deals with Lillymon, which was episodes 14, 15 and 16 of the original

Episodes 08 and 09 are the Gathering Arc, the original 17, 18 and 19

Episodes 10 and 11 are the Shademon Arc, the original 20, 21 and 22

Episode 12 is the Chase backstory episode, what would have been the original 23

And Episode 13 is the ExTyrannomon story, originally episodes 24, 25 and 26 of the original.
